Prejudice, discrimination, intolerance, and wars all in the name of God have been an integral part of the human condition for at least as long as that condition has been recorded. But the price on these addictions is getting pretty steep. It could be the time has come when we will have to give them up. I don't expect we'll all quit cold turkey; but maybe some honest, open, sit-down heart-to-hearts might help to see us through. Ken Ungerecht's "God Theories" is, I believe, an appropriate read for this period in our history, particularly because of the never-ending battle between the secularists and the religious. In this book, Ungerecht builds on the things that we know and comes up with a synthesis that takes these ideas into account. It is almost as if he is thinking aloud and leading us through his thought process, so that we are able to come up with a conclusion that seems more or less reasonable.
Anyone who is trying to make sense of the world will probably find this book interesting. I think teenagers and young adults would benefit from reading this, because it presents its own brand of philosophy by clearly identifying its building blocks. However, for those who are already well-read, it can be quite tedious to read through Ungerecht's enumeration of scientific facts and other pieces of trivia which do not necessarily have much to do with what the book is trying to accomplish. In any case, it is a simple yet thought-provoking read.
As the book title suggests, Ken Ungerecht's God Theories2nd Edition is an intriguing exploration of the vast field of human spirituality. With so many religions ardently believing in their ideas of creation and the Supreme Creator, there is much to absorb for the avid seeker of spiritual truth. In a nutshell, Ungerecht tries to define a balance between rational and irrational as he tries to use God Theories 2nd Edition as a platform for a thought-provoking discussion regarding the existence and influence of a Supreme Creator. An idea that is particularly interesting is Ungerecht's conclusion, based on his findings, that we live forever. The author puts his 35 years of teaching experience on full display by including tidbits on high school and college level evolution theories and discussion. Above all else, Ungerecht seeks to find a unifying thread between religions that will allow human beings to not only explore, but understand and embrace the higher significance and purpose in life.
The topic of divine existence is an age- old question that stirs up intense emotions in some people who feel very strongly one way or the other. The lines of debate are usually along the lines of science vs. faith with each side taking an absolute, all or nothing approach and refusing to budge no matter what counter- arguments are presented.
But does it have to be this way? Can science and faith work together to draw the most accurate conclusion? The author of God Theories believes that they can and in this book, he blends science, reason, logic, intuition, and faith for a better overall understanding. The author believes that spirituality is an essential component of the human dimension but he also feels that science offers much that is actually compatible to the belief in a divine being. Rather than take a one- dimensional position, this book encourages the reader to consider science as they seek an answer to the God debate. It is clear that the author is a believer in the divine, but he is also a man of science and he doesn't see why science cannot be an ally in the search for proof of divine existence.
Probably the most interesting section in this book is the one that attempts to offer a mathematical proof for the existence of God. When I first read it, I admit that it did get me thinking, but I knew there was something flawed in the application of the proof. The mathematics is accurate, but I knew something wasn't quite right in the logic and after thinking about it, I finally realized the problem. What the author has done is construct a probability table that shows the chances for you being the person you are today. Considering a woman produces about 400 eggs in her lifetime and a man produces 1 trillion sperm, there is a 400 trillion to 1 chance that you would be born. Furthermore, if you go back even one generation, the odds are magnified even more against you being you, for the simple fact that, for you to be born the way you are, your parents had to also be born the way they are. The odds against this are staggering, to put it mildly, and the book concludes that with the probability being so small, it has to mean that divine intervention is responsible.
This is a compelling argument and it makes mathematical sense, so it will appeal to those who want scientific, rational proof before they will believe in God. However, there is a problem with this argument. Yes, it is true that for you or I to be born, the odds would be 400 trillion to 1, but as small as those odds are, it doesn't prove divine intervention and the reason is because there was no pre-selection in the process. If it was possible to see the 400 trillion possibilities, select the one you wanted, and then have it come true, then yes, the fact that any one of us was born would, indeed, be miraculous. But that isn't how it works. I didn't look at a massive book of 400 trillion baby options, select the one I wanted, and then have my wish come true. It doesn't work like that.
Another way of looking at the flaw in this thinking is to consider an example as follows. Suppose I wrote down the name of every person on Earth on a small card, placed them in a large container, then randomly pulled out one of the cards. There are about 7 billion people on the planet, so the odds of pulling any one name would be 7 billion to one. However, regardless of how small the odds, if I reach my hand into the container and pull out a card, the fact remains that I had to pull out something. Now, If I were to pre-select a person and then pull it out, then yes, my feat would be shocking and divine intervention would almost be a requirement to beat such odds. But this isn't what is happening and having a baby is no different. No one pre- selects from a pool of 400 trillion potential babies by looking at the options, choosing the one they like, and then having it come true.
Aside from this flawed proof, however, I still like God Theories and I like the way the author approaches the subject of God's existence by combining a little bit of faith with a little bit of science. I also like how respectful the author is. Even when he is discussing controversial people like Richard Dawkins, he is still respectful in his tone and he gives everyone their due. Again, it is clear that the author is on the God- believing side, but it is equally clear that he is still searching and is ready to consider all possibilities.
The question of divine existence is one that will never be decided completely and God Theories is a good book for its ability to get people thinking and for its approach that joins together the pro- religion crowd with the pro- science crowd. The book could be better with more analysis, more reflection, and more length but it is still a good book and I like that the author is at least trying to bring together the forces of faith and reason in an effort to find a common solution to this age- old question.
